Reliance jio’s plan that offers free voice call until the end of the current year is going to be investigated by the TRAI, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. India’s three largest Telcos Vodafone India, Idea Cellular and Bharti Airtel brought this complaint to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India as they want clarification on the matter from the regulator. Operators have raised many issues including non-discriminating and predatory pricing, interconnection usage charges and other issues. TTO, telecommunication traffic order is discussing this matter as the common letter has been submitted by the operators. The chief executive of Vodafone India Sunil Sood told the Economic Times that he is going to examine the Jio traffic and will look into the matter soon. The regulations of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India mandate that the tariffs generated by service providers should be nondiscriminatory, non-predatory and a fee of 14 paisa per minute should be payable to an operator for receiving calls from other networks.
Complaints of other Telecom companies
Sunil Bharti Mittal, the chairman of Bharti Airtel said that if voice service is provided for free then it should be less than the fall foul of the TTO and IUC of 14 paisa per minute. Going below that cost is a straightforward situation of the predatory pricing. Reliance Jio’s free call offer has landed Jio in a big fight with the country’s other biggest telecom operators. All the big telecom operators Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea have written letter to the top government offices including the PMO which states that Reliance Jio is offering full-fledged free services to the users in the guise of trial testing and it should be immediately banned by the government. According to these big telecom companies, Reliance Jio is only poaching their users with the free service offer.
