SEO Software for Mac: What Actually Installs, and What Just Runs in a Browser

Almost every SEO tool worth using runs in a browser, which means it runs on a Mac exactly as it runs on anything else.

So the real question is much smaller than it looks. Only a handful of SEO tools are desktop applications at all, and those are the only ones where “does it work on Mac” is a genuine question.

This separates the two properly. The desktop tools below were checked against each vendor’s own download page in October 2026, because platform support changes and published lists do not always keep up.

The short version

  • Browser-based tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, Search Console) have no Mac question. They work.
  • Four crawlers install natively on macOS: Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, SEO PowerSuite and Netpeak Spider.
  • Apple Silicon is where to pay attention, not macOS generally.
  • If a guide lists twenty “Mac SEO tools”, nineteen of them are websites.

Why Most Mac SEO Lists Are Padding

Search for SEO tools for Mac and the results will put Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, Ubersuggest and Google Search Console near the top.

None of those are Mac software. They are websites. They work on a Mac for the same reason Gmail does, and listing them answers a question nobody asked.

The distinction that matters:

TypeMac question?Examples
Browser-based suitesNo. Any browser, any OS.Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, Search Console
Desktop crawlersYes. Needs a macOS build.Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, SEO PowerSuite, Netpeak Spider
Browser extensionsNo, if you use Chrome or Firefox.Detailed, Keyword Surfer

Only the middle row is a real compatibility question, and it is a short list.

“Not stated” means the vendor’s page does not say either way, not that it fails. In practice an Intel build runs on Apple Silicon through Rosetta.

What Actually Installs on macOS

Checked against each vendor’s own download page in October 2026.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Offers Windows, macOS and Linux builds, with .dmg, .exe and .deb installers on the download page, and Apple Silicon support stated.

It is the default crawler for most people, and the free tier crawls up to 500 URLs, which covers a small site completely. The free versus paid comparison covers where the limit starts to bite.

Every technical check on this site was done with it, on a Mac.

Sitebulb

The only one that lists separate Apple Silicon and Intel builds on its download page, alongside Windows. Both are .dmg files.

Sitebulb’s pitch is that it explains findings rather than only listing them, which suits people who are not full-time technical SEOs. It is paid only.

SEO PowerSuite

Lists Windows, Apple and Linux on its download page. It is a bundle of four desktop applications rather than one, covering rank tracking, crawling, backlinks and link outreach.

Being desktop software, rank tracking runs on your own machine rather than a server, which is cheaper and also means it only runs when your Mac is awake. There is more in SEO PowerSuite alternatives.

Netpeak Spider

Lists macOS and Windows. Historically Windows-only, which is why it is often still described that way. The vendor’s current page lists macOS.

ScrapeBox, with a caveat

Widely described as Windows-only. Its own site now states it is “Windows and Apple Mac compatible” and works on Windows 10, Windows 11 and Apple Mac.

That is the vendor’s claim, quoted as found. It is worth checking the download page yourself before buying on the strength of any list, including this one.

Apple Silicon Is the Real Question

Since Apple moved from Intel to its own chips, “runs on Mac” means two different things, and the download page is where you find out which you are getting.

  • Native Apple Silicon build. Runs at full speed. Sitebulb and Screaming Frog both state Apple Silicon support.
  • Intel build via Rosetta. Works, slower, heavier on memory. Fine for occasional use, noticeable on a large crawl.

Before downloading anything, check which Mac you have: Apple menu, About This Mac. If the chip line says M1, M2, M3 or M4, look for the Apple Silicon build rather than the generic one.

Memory matters more than the chip

Desktop crawlers hold the crawl in memory. On a large site that is the limit you hit first, long before processor speed.

A base-model Mac with 8GB handles a few thousand URLs comfortably and struggles past that. Crawlers generally offer a database storage mode that trades speed for capacity, and it is worth switching on before a big crawl rather than after one fails.

Mac-Specific Setup Notes

  • Gatekeeper will block the first launch of anything not from the App Store. Right-click the app and choose Open rather than double-clicking, which gives you the option to proceed. None of these tools is in the App Store.
  • Full Disk Access may be needed for log file analysis, under System Settings, Privacy and Security.
  • Sleep interrupts crawls. A long crawl needs the Mac awake. Change the energy setting first, not after losing four hours of crawling.
  • Browser extensions are a Chrome question, not a Mac one. If a tool offers a Chrome extension, it works on a Mac running Chrome.

The Browser-Based Side

These need no Mac consideration at all, and they are where most of the actual work happens.

  • Google Search Console. Free, and the single most useful tool regardless of platform. Indexing, queries, crawl stats, Core Web Vitals.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools. Free, and covers the index behind DuckDuckGo and Copilot.
  • The big suites. Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and Ubersuggest all run in a browser. If you are choosing between them, the three compared covers it, and there are cheaper routes in Moz alternatives and Ubersuggest alternatives.
  • Audit tools. Browser-based site auditors need nothing installed. WooRank alternatives covers that category.
  • Rank tracking. Mostly cloud-based now, which means it keeps running when your Mac is closed. See SEO tracking tools.

Keyword research

Entirely browser-based, with one Mac-relevant exception worth knowing: Keywords Everywhere and Keyword Surfer are Chrome extensions, so they work on a Mac running Chrome and not in Safari.

That is the general rule for extensions. The question is which browser you use, not which computer.

Google’s own free sources cost nothing and need nothing installed: autocomplete, People Also Ask, and the query data in Search Console for pages you already have.

On-page and content tools

Surfer, Clearscope, Frase and the rest are web applications. There is no desktop version to be compatible with.

If you are on WordPress, your SEO plugin does the on-page work inside the browser too, which makes it platform-irrelevant.

Analytics

Google Analytics, Search Console and most heatmap tools are browser-based. Nothing to install, nothing to check.

The one category where a Mac build matters again is log file analysis, because log files are large and local. Screaming Frog’s Log File Analyser is a separate desktop application with the same platform options as the crawler.

Mistakes Mac Users Make

  • Buying a tool for a job a free one does. On a site under 500 URLs, Screaming Frog’s free tier does the whole crawl. Paying for capacity you will not use is the most common one.
  • Running a big crawl on 8GB. The crawl fails near the end and the time is gone. Switch to database storage mode before starting, not after.
  • Assuming Safari is fine for extensions. Most SEO extensions are Chrome-only. This is a browser decision, and it is easier to keep Chrome for SEO work than to find Safari equivalents.
  • Installing four crawlers. They do the same job. Pick one and learn it properly.
  • Treating a crawl as the audit. A crawler lists problems; it does not tell you which one is costing you traffic. Pair it with Search Console, which is where the audit actually starts.
  • Trusting an old compatibility list. Platform support moves. Two of the tools above are routinely described with the wrong platform support.

What to Actually Install

For most people reading this the honest answer is the first row. A Mac, Chrome, Search Console and the free Screaming Frog tier covers a small site completely, and the technical checklist is what to do with them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SEO software work on a Mac?

Almost all of it, because almost all of it is browser-based. Only desktop crawlers raise a real compatibility question, and four of the main ones offer macOS builds: Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, SEO PowerSuite and Netpeak Spider.

Does Screaming Frog work on Mac?

Yes. Its download page offers Windows, macOS and Linux builds, with Apple Silicon support. The free tier crawls up to 500 URLs.

What is the best SEO tool for a Mac?

For most people, Screaming Frog’s free tier plus Google Search Console. Neither costs anything, and together they cover crawling, indexing and performance for a small site.

Do I need an Apple Silicon version?

If your Mac has an M-series chip, yes, prefer it. Intel builds run through Rosetta, which works but is slower and uses more memory. That difference only becomes noticeable on large crawls.

Why does my Mac block the installer?

Gatekeeper blocks first launch of apps from outside the App Store, which includes all of these. Right-click the app and choose Open instead of double-clicking, and you get the option to continue.

Are there SEO tools that only run on Windows?

Fewer than you would expect, and the position changes. Netpeak Spider was Windows-only and now lists macOS. ScrapeBox is widely described as Windows-only while its own site states Mac compatibility. Check the vendor’s download page rather than a roundup.

Can I do SEO on a Mac without installing anything?

Yes, for a small site. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and a browser cover indexing, queries, performance and most diagnosis. A desktop crawler becomes necessary when you need to see every URL at once.
