Whether you are briefing an agency, reading a report, or learning SEO yourself, knowing this SEO terminology helps. We have grouped them into search basics, links and authority, content, on-page elements, and the practices and updates that decide how well your pages rank.

Search and ranking basics

SEO
SEO means Search Engine Optimization and is the process used to optimize a website's technical configuration, content relevance and link popularity so its pages can become easily findable, more relevant and popular towards user search queries, and as a consequence, search engines rank them better.
Organic Traffic
Organic traffic is those visitors that land on your website from unpaid sources, aka essentially free traffic. Organic sources here include search engines like Google.
Keyword
Keywords are the words and phrases that people type into search engines to find what they're looking for.
Long-tail Keyword
A long tail keyword is a phrase that is generally made from three to five words. Since these keywords are more specific than generic terms, they allow you to target niche demographics.
SERP
Stands for "search engine results page". This is the page that shows after conducting a search.
Organic Ranking
Organic search refers to the search results of a search engine that cannot be influenced by paid advertising. Organic search results are ranked according to their relevance to the search term.
Landing Page
A landing page is a standalone web page that a person "lands" on after clicking through from an email, ad, or other digital location. Once they're on your landing page, users are encouraged to take an action, such as joining your list or buying your products.
Google Indexing
A page is indexed by Google if it has been visited by the Google crawler ("Googlebot"), analyzed for content and meaning, and stored in the Google index. Indexed pages can be shown in Google Search results (if they follow Google's webmaster guidelines).

Content and writing

CMS
CMS stands for content management system. CMS is computer software or an application that uses a database to manage all content, and it can be used when developing a website. Ex: WordPress
Yoast SEO Plugin
Yoast SEO is a WordPress plugin that improves your website's rankings on search engines, by helping you optimize your site's content and keywords.
Relevant Content

Ultimate Guide

Rejected Article
Articles that have not passed checking for both SEO and Content quality. Plagiarism counts as an automatic reject.
Transition Words
Transitional words and phrases can create powerful links between ideas in your paper and can help your reader understand the logic of your paper. (Good for SEO)
Passive Voice
In a sentence using passive voice, the subject is acted upon; he or she receives the action expressed by the verb. (Bad for SEO)
Active Voice
In most English sentences with an action verb, the subject performs the action denoted by the verb. (Good for SEO)

On-page elements

Image filename
Every image on the internet has a unique name given to it , this is called the image filename. You can also see the filename of an image when saved offline, on your computer. When you create, edit or save an image, you give it a filename.
Image Alt Tags
Definition: An alt tag, also known as "alt attribute" and "alt description," is an HTML attribute applied to image tags to provide a text alternative for search engines. Applying images to alt tags such as product photos can positively impact an ecommerce store's search engine rankings.
SEO Title
This is the HTML title tag, which we also call the page title or SEO title. When you look something up in a search engine, you get a list of results that appear as snippets. Often, the SEO title is part of the snippet together with at least a URL and a meta description. (for better SEO, the SEO Title should be the Topic of the article plus the Website name with a dash in between them)
Slug (URL)
A slug is the part of a URL that identifies a particular page on a website in an easy-to-read form. In other words, it's the part of the URL that explains the page's content. EX: www.example.com.au/slug (for better SEO, the slug should be the exact keyword)
Meta Description
A meta description is an HTML element that provides a brief summary of a web page. A page's meta description tag is displayed as part of the search snippet in a search engine results page (SERP) and is meant to give the user an idea of the content that exists within the page and how it relates to their search query. (for better SEO, the keyword should be included here)

SEO practices and updates

Black-hat SEO
SEO practices that are a violation of Google's quality guidelines
White-hat SEO
SEO practices that are acceptable in Google's quality guidelines
Keyword Cannibalization
Having multiple pages/posts in a website that compete for the same search query. This lowers each other's chances of ranking higher.
Google Algorithm Updates
